Cotton is a soft, fluffy fiber that grows in a boll around the seeds of the flowering plant Gossypium.
The fiber is spun into yarn or thread to make a soft, breathable and durable textile.
The word ‘cotton’ has an Arabic origin (from words qutn or qutun). Marco Polo, Venetian merchant and explorer, described a province called Khotan in Turkestan, where cotton was grown. Arab merchants brought cotton cloth to Europe about 800 A.D.
Current estimates for world production of cotton are about 25 million tonnes or 110 million bales annually. India is currently the largest producer of cotton.
